Have you ever wondered what is really under the hood and is it the mystery some PC engineers would have us believe?

So you got the box and you want know how it works

To be sure you could just be bamboozled with all the blurb, jargon and glossary. This is not really a repair page; merely a breakdown of what is inside your box / laptop (laptops dealt with later) and what it does. Dealing with Desktops first I will try to map the internal layout from the PSU (power supply unit), the motherboard (that board with all with all the electronic bits and most importantly, the processor). If you want to take the panel off your desktop to have a look, and you feel suitably able then do so. A bit of an obvious one here! Disconnect the box from the mains, although all the internal voltages are low voltage  running 12v / 5v dc; the incomer is 230v ac (in Europe).
